Off the Grid (Sorta)

When we started searching for this swimming hole we'd heard about out in the Malibu hills, we were ready to do some serious route mapping and riding new trails to get there. As it turns out (and according to Yelp), the secret oasis we were searching for was a bit more accessible than we realized. Part of a developed campground right off the main road, it would be no trouble to find. And in fact, we may need to add a dirt detour of our own if we wanted a real adventure.

But here's the thing, an excursion into remote, uncharted lands isn't always the key to a great weekend escape. Sometimes, the more easily accessible it is, the more likely you are to actually fit it into that one weekend of free time you found in your schedule. All the more likely friends will join in, coming in from Long Beach, Santa Monica, and the East Side to share stories (and maybe a few sips from the flask) around the campfire.

We found the campground all right, and made a quick overnight out of it. Through the Santa Monica Mountains to the elusive swimming hole, all with just a change of clothes and a sleeping bag in our packs. Besides, just down the road from our campground was a liquor store with all the provisions we needed for an excellent end-of-summer campout.

Off-the-grid location not required!
