Five girls roll around the apron and slowly make their way up to the rail. Poised to drop into the track below, they exude a tense excitement, hinted at by the jiggle of a leg on the pedal or the tap of fingertips on the metal beam. They will contest each other at intermittent sprints so there's a bit of sizing each other up, but before all that it's just five girls... shooting the bull, offering advice and cracking jokes. A bit of respite before tearing each other's legs off.
Before the competition, it's about trust. Trusting yourself, your bike, and your crew. All of a sudden you become part of something bigger. A pace line, moving as a single unit. Traveling faster than you can alone. Giving into the flow.
